Designing a house plan according to Vastu Shastra requires proper knowledge and technical understanding. A strong foundation in Indian Vastu Vidya along with basic engineering geometry is essential for preparing an accurate and effective Vastu-compliant layout.
It is not mandatory to be an architect or civil engineer to create a Vastu house plan. However, having a clear understanding of engineering geometry and measurement techniques is very important.

1. Site selection and measurements of the site:
Land is the most essential requirement for any building, and careful attention must be given while selecting it. According to Vastu Shastra, square and rectangular plots are considered the most auspicious for residential construction. In contrast, triangular, irregular, polygonal, or oddly shaped plots are generally regarded as less favorable.
The quality of soil also plays an important role. Land with good stability and proper soil density is considered suitable for constructing a safe and harmonious home.
Accurate measurement and correct direction are the key requirements before starting any home design as per Vastu Shastra. Each side of the plot must be measured precisely. For greater accuracy, diagonal measurements and corner verification should also be taken to ensure the plot is properly aligned and proportioned.
2. Determination of direction :
Accurate direction plays a crucial role in planning a building according to Vastu Shastra. Without determining the correct orientation, it is not possible to prepare a proper Vastu-compliant layout.
In ancient times, a gnomon was used to determine the East–West line. A vertical cone or stick was placed on the ground, and its shadow was observed throughout the day to accurately identify the true East–West direction. This traditional method helped in establishing precise cardinal directions.
Today, we commonly use a magnetic compass to find the North direction. However, it is important to understand that Vastu directions are not always exactly the same as magnetic north. The difference may vary from place to place due to magnetic declination.
Additionally, the needle of a magnetic compass can fluctuate because of nearby electric lines, iron objects, steel structures, or electronic devices. Therefore, extra care must be taken while using a compass to ensure accurate directional readings.
3. Effects of 32 main entrances:
The location of the main entrance is one of the most important factors in Vastu home planning. According to Vastu Shastra, there are a total of 32 possible entrance positions across all four sides of a plot, with 8 entrances on each side.
However, out of these 32 entrances, only 9 door positions are considered highly auspicious for residential homes.
Auspicious Entrances by Facing Direction:
For North-Facing House Plans:
Soma, Bhallat, and Mukhya Pada are considered auspicious.
For East-Facing House Plans:
Jayant and Mahendra Pada are favorable entrance positions.
For South-Facing House Plans:

The calculation of 32 entrance positions is based on directional division:
Total Degrees in a Circle = 360°
Total Sides = 4 (East, South, West, North)
Each Side = 360° ÷ 4 = 90°
Total Entrances = 32
Entrances per Side = 32 ÷ 4 = 8
Degree Measurement of Each Entrance = 90° ÷ 8 = 11.25°
Thus, each entrance zone occupies 11.25 degrees on each side of the plot.

4. Casting of Vastu Purusha Mandala
The casting of the Vastu Purusha Mandala is one of the most vital steps in Vastu planning and design. All classical Vastu texts describe a graphical representation of divine energies mapped onto a defined Vastu space (i.e., the plot).
According to Vastu principles, forty-five invisible energy fields (deities) are distributed across different zones of the plot. Each zone carries a specific type of energy that influences the function and outcome of the spaces planned within it.
Before starting the architectural design, the Vastu Purusha Mandala must be properly superimposed on the plot according to accurate direction and measurements. Only after this alignment can the layout be planned in harmony with the energy grid.

5. 16 Zones ( As per Vishwakarma Prakash)
For vastu house planning, determining 16 zones is an essential step. This step divides the whole build-up into 16 (Sixteen) equal angular segments. Each zone has its attributes and effect. Calculation of 16 Zones:- In the polar method entire area is under 360 degrees. If the built-up area divided by 16 (sixteen angular segments ) [ i.e 360 / 16 = 22.5 degree ] , 16 zones are formed.

To determine the 16 zones:
Total Degrees = 360°
Number of Zones = 16
Calculation = 360° ÷ 16 = 22.5°

6. Ayadi Calculation for vastu plan and design.
